April Update
Naples Waterfront Association and
Naples Backyard History Announcement
Naples Backyard History's 'Wednesdays on the Waterfront' walking tours guests will have something new to behold as the 'Pinta' and the 'Nina', replicas of Columbus' ships, will be docked at Tin City, 1200 5th Avenue South, thanks to Cruise Naples, who willingly gave up their docking space for the Double Sunshine to allow for the ships' surprise visit after making a call this past Monday to book the 'sailing museum' for March 2011.
This surprise visit will also mark the launch of the new Naples Waterfront Association, which was recently formed to promote an almost forgotten part of the City of Naples' history - its waterfront. Harry Julian, President of Cruise Naples said, "The character and identity of the City came from the waterfront and we hope to help bring back some of its history, lore and appreciation while having fun with all the businesses who love the waterfront and helped launch the association."
Convenient parking is made available by Kevin Stoneburner, owner of Bayfront, one of the founding members of the NWA who noted, "This will give guests and families over Easter a chance to see the Waterfront, use the Gorden River Underpass and see a part of local and American history." Two parking garages on 8th Avenue South will also give guests additional places to park and enjoy the stroll down 6th Avenue South leading to Tin City. NWA founding members are: Lois Bolin, John Callis, Vin DePasquale, Kelly Ellis, Lance Julian, Harry Julian, Kyle Langbelhn, Clark Morton, Frank Perrucci, Tony Phelan, Grant Phelan, Randy Smith, Kevin Stoneburner, and Trisha Youngquist.

NBYH History has two Mini Musuem exhibits on the Naples Waterfront:
Tin City's Working Waterfront & Bayfront's Heritage Trail Mini Museum.
We are proud to partner with the newly formed & long over due
Naples Waterfront Association. |
COLUMBUS REPLICA SHIPS PINTA AND NINA TO LAND IN NAPLES
The 'Pinta' and the 'Nina', replicas of Columbus' ships will open in Naples April 1st (no kidding) and docked at Tin City, 1200 5th Avenue South, until their departure early Tuesday morning April 6th.
The 'Nina' was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools, and was called by Archaeology magazine " the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built." The craftsmanship of construction and the details in the rigging make it a truly fascinating visit back to the Age of Discovery. The 'Nina' was used in the production of the film '1492' starring Gerard Depardieu and directed by Ridley Scott.
The 'Pinta' was built in Brazil to accompany the 'Nina' on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel and offers larger deck space for walk-aboard tours and has a 900 sq. ft. main salon down below to view slide shows of the ships' construction. The Pinta is available for private parties while in port.
Both ships will be touring together as a new and enhanced 'sailing museum' for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the 'Caravel', a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.
While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for walk-aboard self-guided tours. The prices are $7.00 for adults, $6.00 for seniors and $5.00 for children. Children 4 and under are Free. The ship is open every day from 9:00 - 6:00 p.m. No reservations necessary.
Teachers or groups wishing to schedule a 30 minute guided tour with a crew member should call the ship directly at 787 672 2152 787 672 2152 . Or email columfnd@surfbvi.com Minimum of 15. $4.00 per person . Visit our website at www.thenina.com for additional information. The ships arrive Wednesday March 31st and there will be a private viewing for the media after docking approximatley 2:00 PM.**
Cruise Naples is available for tours as the Double Sunshine will be docked near the Riverwalk Restaurant. Call 239-263-4949 239-263-4949 for reservations. |
November Update
Hello Backyard History Lovers,
We have been working very hard to promote the magic in this place we call home and look forward to sharing our news with you.
Our very own Dr. Lois Bolin is now on of the Economic Development Council's Board of Directors (EDC) and the Advisory Board of the Naples International Film Festival (NIFF).
NBYH wil host the kickoff off for Virginia Saalman childrens' book on the Everglades called Kroopenpopper, illustrated by legally blind artist, Patty Jones on Saturday, November 21. There will be a Meet & Greet for Ms Jones and Ms Saalman on Friday, November 20 at the The Lighthouse of Collier at Bayfront.
Our two exhibits in the Birthplace of Naples, Third Street South will have two companion exhibits coming January 2010. Tin City will host the "History of the Working Waterfront ". Bayfront will host the "History of the Tamiami Trail". More to come.
November 11th is Veteran Day and we will be at Cambier Park at 10 AM. We welcomed to opportunity to play a small role in honoring our Veterans on November 14th. Fred J. Koenekamp, ASC, Director of Photography for Patton and American Society of Cinematographers Lifetime Achievement Award winner will be in attendance. (SEE BELOW)
This will also be the first time the Naples Women's Club will be recognized as the organization that spearheaded the Veteran Memorial in Cambier Park in 1984 - making it the first Veterans Memorial in Collier County. Now that is noteworthy!
Our Christmas Parade is Tuesday, December 8th and NBYH is assisting with the theme and new format. The Theme is : "The Magic of Christmas Past" and judging the entries will be Old-Timers who helped to create the magic in this place we call home: Duke Turner, Mary Watkins, Merle Harris, Jean Walker Humphries, Eddie Frank and more!
Gingerbread Decorating contest between local restaurants begins November 23rd.
Its hard to believe that 2010 is just around the corner. We look forward to the potential and possibilities that this new year and season will bring for us all.

Florida History Fair (FHF)
NBYH brought The Florida History Fair (FHF), a twenty year old competition, to Collier County for the first time last year taking one (1) student to Tallahassee. This year, thanks to our new Collier Coordinator, John Heers, History Chair at Seacrest County Day School, we have 148 students preparing to participate. Several Public Schools are ready to sign on. We can see Collier County at National History Day - one day.- maybe sooner than we thought. Thanks John! You have made history.
Got History? You bet your sweet bippie we do! |

NBYH Host Site for the
Naples International Film Festival (NIFF)
Invitation Only - VIP Party
"A Salute to Film History in the Making"
In 1988 the EDC publicly recognizes the film production industry as an economic development industry and the State of Florida designates the EDC as the official Collier County Film Commission. In 1999, the Marco Island Film Festival expanded the horizons of film in Collier County until 2005.
In 2009, NIFF shot beyond that horizon with its successful
three day festival this past weekend with many of its
films shown to a sold out crowd only.
Friday, November 6th, NBYH hosted
a special evening with two special guest.
Fred J. Koenekamp, ASC - 2005 Lifetime Achievement Recipient from
the American Society of Cinematography. HIs movies include Patton, Papillion, Towering Inferno, for which he received an Academy Award
We dont have room to add the other 200 films to his credit.
Steven Humphry Bogart was also our other special guest.
"Here's looking at you kid."

David Frelick of Alpha Media Inc. served as our interviewer as Ken Olson served as the "man behind the lens" - the place Mr. Koenekamp is used to being.
Two legacies meet for the first time. |

How Much is One Full Swoop?
How many times in our lives do we get a chance to connect to a loved one, do something for a friend and give a gift to your community all in one full swoop? I never really knew what a "full swoop" was until this past weekend when NBYH had the distinct honor to host one of film's legends at the VIP Invitation Only Reception for the Naples International Film Festival.
Kathy Guyitt of Design Tech of SWFL, a long time friend of Lois Bolin brought her father, the legendary cinemotographer, Fred J Koenekamp, to be NBYH's honored guest.
On November 11, at Cambier Park the Collier County Veterans Council will honor Veterans Day. Fred, a Veteran will be there. So will his daughter, Kathy, and her husband, Dennis, who are both also Veterans.
On November 14th, at the Mercado Silverspot Cinema, a special BlueRay Widescreen viewing of Patton, for which Fred received an Academy Award nomination, will be shown in honor of our Veterans.
It begins at 11 AM with lunch, followed by the film, a Q & A and birthday cake reception afterwards in honor of Veterans Day, Patton's Birthday and coincidentally Fred's birthday as well - a November 11th tribute.
This event is graciously underwritten by Kathy and Dennis Guyitt.
So in one full swoop, a friend received a favor, a group of film buffs met a legacy, our VETS were paid a most deserving tribute and a daughter got to show off her Dad, re-connect with him after her Mom's recent death of a few months ago.
So how much is one full swoop? I reckon it pretty close to a bushel and a peck - which is about how much Kathy loves her Dad.
NOTE: At this time the movie is sold out but if you'd like to come for cake, call Kathy at 949-2455. | |
